Most visitors reach Etna on a tour with hotel pick-up. If you prefer to travel at your own pace, car rental at Catania Fontanarossa Airport is the easiest way to get to the volcano — and a car hire in Catania is also the best start for a road trip around Sicily.

Do you need a car for Etna?
No — the most popular Etna tours include pick-up in Catania or Taormina. A car makes sense if you want to start early before the crowds, book a tour that meets at Rifugio Sapienza, or combine the volcano with Taormina, the Alcantara Gorges and the wineries on the northern slope in the same trip.
Driving from Catania to Mount Etna
- South side (Rifugio Sapienza, about 1,900 m): from Catania follow the signs to Nicolosi, then the SP92 mountain road up to Rifugio Sapienza and the cable car station. Allow about one hour from the airport.
- North side (Piano Provenzana, about 1,800 m): drive via Linguaglossa — a quieter, greener route that pairs well with Taormina and the Etna wineries.
- Above these points private cars are not allowed: you continue by cable car, 4x4 bus or on a guided hike.
Parking and practical tips
- There are large car parks next to Rifugio Sapienza and the cable car station; parking is usually paid, so keep some cash or a card handy.
- Pick up the car at the airport rather than in the city centre — central Catania has limited-traffic zones (ZTL) and busy streets.
- Fill the tank before you start climbing; there are few petrol stations on the upper slopes.
- From late autumn to spring the upper road can be covered in snow, and snow chains or winter tyres may be required. Check the conditions before you drive up.
- The mountain roads are narrow and winding — a compact car is easier to drive and to park.
Car rental in Sicily
Catania is the busiest airport in Sicily for car rental, but you can also pick up a car in Palermo, Trapani or Comiso, or return it at a different airport. A rental car is the easiest way to combine Etna with Taormina, Syracuse, Noto and the Valley of the Temples in one road trip.
