Trail towards the summit craters of Mount Etna

Mount Etna Travel Guide

Can You Visit Mount Etna?

Updated October 2026

Yes, you can visit Mount Etna โ€” every day of the year, and closer to the craters than most people expect. Europeโ€™s highest active volcano is also one of the most accessible: a road climbs to almost 2,000 metres, a cable car continues to 2,500 metres and certified guides lead small groups to the summit craters when conditions allow.

How high can you go on Mount Etna?

Etna is organised in three levels:

Can you climb to the summit?

Yes, on a guided summit hike. Most start at Rifugio Sapienza, use the cable car and a 4x4 to reach about 2,850 m and continue on foot for around two hours over volcanic sand. The walk is steep but not technical โ€” good fitness and proper hiking shoes are enough. If volcanic activity or strong wind closes the summit, guides switch to a safe alternative route, so the tour still goes ahead.

Is it safe?

Etna is closely monitored by Italyโ€™s volcano observatory (INGV Osservatorio Etneo), and access to the upper slopes is adjusted daily. Eruptions on Etna are usually effusive โ€” slow lava flows rather than explosive blasts โ€” which is why people can live and farm on its slopes. The real risks for visitors are cold, wind, altitude and loose ground, all of which a guide manages.

What does a visit cost?

Which Etna tour should you choose?

For the full experience and good fitness, choose a summit hike. For a relaxed first visit, the morning or sunset tour with lava cave and tasting is the most popular choice. Staying in Catania? Read how to get to Etna from Catania. Staying in Taormina? See Etna from Taormina.
