From Taormina’s terraces, Mount Etna looks close enough to touch — and it nearly is. The volcano’s northern slope is about an hour’s drive away, which makes an Etna trip the most popular day out from Taormina and Giardini Naxos.
How far is Etna from Taormina?
Piano Provenzana, the main starting point on Etna’s quieter northern slope, is roughly 50 kilometres and one hour from Taormina. Rifugio Sapienza on the busier southern slope is about 1.5 hours away. Most tours from Taormina use one of the two depending on volcanic activity and weather.
Sunset tour from Taormina
The most memorable way to see Etna. You are picked up in the afternoon, walk along a crater rim as the sun drops behind the volcano and the sky turns orange, visit a lava cave with helmets and torches and finish with a tasting of Etna wine and local produce. You are back in Taormina for a late dinner.
Half-day and full-day tours
- Half-day with hiking, cave and tastings — ideal if you only want a few hours away from the beach.
- Upper craters day tour — cable car and 4x4 bus to almost 3,000 metres, for those who want to get high.
- Etna and Alcantara Gorges — combine the volcano with a swim in a basalt canyon, only 30 minutes from Taormina.
Can you go without a tour?
Public transport from Taormina to Etna is limited: you would need a train or bus to Catania first and then the AST bus to Rifugio Sapienza — a very long day. With a rental car the drive to Piano Provenzana is easy. For most visitors a tour with hotel pick-up is simply the most relaxed option.
